Outstanding introduction

This is the one to get if you are serious about ai & machine learning.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. The chapters on ai & machine learning are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with ai & machine learning.

Fine as a reference

Useful in parts. Fine as a reference, less so as a cover-to-cover read.

This is the third book I have read on ai & machine learning this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. Fine, but there are stronger books on the same subject if you look around.

Exactly what I was looking for

A superb guide. The examples are small but complete.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
