INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

This book is for developers and engineers who have faced a bug that seems impossible to fix. It moves beyond basic print statements and debuggers to explore a systematic approach to diagnosis. Learn how to tackle complex issues like race conditions, memory corruption, performance degradation, and non-deterministic failures. Strong content, uneven pacing

Almost excellent. A second edition could easily push it to five stars.

A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. A good addition to a technical library, as long as you know what you are buying.

Solid and well-organised

Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.

This is the third book I have read on software development this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

The best book on this subject I have read

Genuinely excellent — I finished it in a week and immediately started again.

A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. If you have the prerequisites, this is an easy recommendation. I will be keeping it on my desk rather than the shelf.
