Good, with realistic expectations

I got a lot out of this, even if a few sections felt rushed.

This is the third book I have read on research this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

Excellent from start to finish

A superb guide. The examples are small but complete.

I have been working with ai & machine learning for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. An easy five stars from me. I look forward to whatever the author writes next.

Very good, with a few caveats

Well worth picking up if you already have the basics.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

An enjoyable and informative read

A worthwhile addition to my shelf, with realistic expectations.

This is the third book I have read on ai & machine learning this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. Worth picking up if you already have the basics. Set realistic expectations and you will get a lot out of it.

Good, but not for absolute beginners

A worthwhile addition to my shelf, with realistic expectations.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Solid, and I would buy another book from this author without hesitation.

An enjoyable and informative read

Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.

A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. The writing is direct and does not waste space on filler, which I value in a technical book. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The writing is direct and does not waste space on filler, which I value in a technical book. Good value for the price and worth the time it takes to work through properly.
